[Written by Jeff] The issue I have with searching for digital nomad-related questions online (like "how to make friends as a digital nomad") is the absolute dumpster fire of "tips and tricks" you find. I'm talking about articles written on huge websites (Forbes, USA Today) by people who aren't digital nomads. And oftentimes these articles are just regurgitating eight other lists published on the topic. Zero digital nomads, lots of recommendations. That's a knowledge problem. Here's an example that irks me: If you search for "cities to live in as a digital nomad" you'll find an article that recommends San Jose, Costa Rica. Now, we LOVE Costa Rica. No, more...We adore it. But amongst digital nomads, San Jose is well known to be the place that you land and immediately leave, en route to Jaco, Santa Teresa, Puerto Viejo, or Arenal. We pride ourselves on giving you the real picture of what digital nomad life looks like, the good and bad, from actual digital nomads. So this week Marisa and I recorded real-life techniques for making friends and building community as a digital nomad. And...we debunked a lot of the misleading or flat-out incorrect recommendations you'll read online.
Here's some teasers of what we talked about: Episode Highlights: ๐ก Coliving Spaces: Are they actually good for meeting other digital nomads and building communities, or are they becoming more like hotels? The answer is somewhere in the middle. ๐ WiFi Tribe: It's what brought together Diego, Marisa and me years ago. Most of our friends are Wifi Tribe-adjacent (friends of friends from WFT). ๐ป Coworking Spaces: Are they actually places where people connect, or are they places like the gym where you want people to leave you alone to focus? ๐ Sports Groups: Possibly an awesome, overlooked way to make some likeminded buddies. Marisa and I came up with 11 techniques to make friends, and rated them for how effective they are. ๐ Listen on Spotify See you next week!
